THE MONEGASQUE RED CROSS
HELPS THOSE AROUND THE WORLD

Afghanistan was at the heart of concerns and discussions at the last meeting of the Executive Committee of the Monegasque Red Cross, under the effective presidency of H.S.H. Crown Prince Albert.

An earthquake, which devastated the district of Nahrim, in the province of Baghlan, in the north, has left 800 dead, many wounded, and has destroyed 4,000 homes surpassing the long list of casualties from the seism of 1998.

Without waiting for more precise numbers, H.S.H. Prince Albert requested that the Monegasque Red Cross act quickly to bring financial assistance of 15,000 euros to the region. This assistance was a supplement to the aid mission put into action by the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent whose aid missions include: aid for the wounded, evacuation towards the hospitals which they must also supply with medicine and medical supplies, and additional supplies of tents, blankets and food to meet the needs of 6,000 families.

Meanwhile, there was also a strong earthquake in Turkey. Although the intensity was less than that of the earthquake in 1999, there were still dramatic consequences for the people of Turkey: 41 dead, 300 wounded, 6,000 cattle dead, and 10,000 homes destroyed or damaged. The International Federation of the Societies of the Red Cross launched a 6-month assistance program to aid approximately 60,000 people. The Monegasque Red Cross will also supplement this aid mission with a contribution of 15,000 euros.

The order of the day for the Executive Committee concentrated equally on requests for international solidarity to help countries plagued by murderous epidemics: in Gabon the Ebola virus has been spreading since 1994, in Ethiopia meningitis. The Monegasque Red Cross is associated with these aid and prevention programs, in the same way that, in the past, it made a contribution to the eradication of the poliomyelitis in the Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Ethiopia. Fifteen thousand additional euros were dedicated to these actions.

A link of the large chain of solidarity which constitutes the International Red Cross, the Monegasque Red Cross does not ignore any opportunity to help, within the realm of its means, thus expressing its dedication to the principles of humanity and universality to which it adheres.

Its interest in aiding remote countries does not hinder the organization from aiding the Monegasque community through social assistance, first aid, health, and aid to the sick and elderly.

The will of its President, H.S.H. Prince Albert and the generosity of its faithful donors are, without a doubt, the determining factors of the "action without borders" of the Monegasque Red Cross.
